I am working on a video where I write next to my tattoo different thoughts that I have in the day. My tattoo is "I am." from a Sylvia Plath poem in the book The Bell Jar: “i listened to the old bray of my heart, i am, i am, i am."
I write things with a pen, what I am thinking and feeling, from "I am ugly", "I am happy", "I am worried", really just common from my day, and then I scrub them with soap. It is leaving my wrist a little beat up in the process, but it is merely a physical reflection of the abuse myself and others inflict on our minds daily. The placement of the tattoo, as well as this choice to represent abuse on this particular part of the body were not random. Knowing the connotations present with the wrist and the life, blood, and self-inflicted punishment or physical release that is involved with this part of the body, it was necessary for me to place the words, and this type of performance here.
